Crime rates on the rise in india

Alarming surge in crime rates in India

Crimes against women and rapes are alarmingly high

India is experiencing an alarming surge in the crime rates during 2018-19. An average of 91 rapes-289 kidnappings and 80 murders were reported daily across India.  This was revealed by the latest data by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).
According to Press Trust of India, 5,074,634 cognizable crimes comprising 3,132,954 Indian Penal Code (IPC) crimes and 1,941,680 Special and Local Laws (SLL) crimes were registered in 2018 altogether.
Kidnapping and abduction cases showed a jump of 10.3 per cent in 2018 when 105,734 FIRs were registered. In 2017, 95,893 such cases were registered, while the number stood at 88,008 in 2016, the NCRB said.
The number of cases registered under the ‘crime against women’ category in 2018 was 378,277, up from 359,849 in 2017 and 338,954 in 2016. The number of rape cases, as defined in IPC section 376, was 33,356 in 2018.
According to the NCRB, though the overall crime numbers show an increase of 1.3 per cent in registration of cases over 2017 (50,07,044 cases), crime rate per lakh population has come down from 388.6 in 2017 to 383.5 in 2018.
The Indian federal capital Delhi has been badly affected with the increase in crimes. Delhi has become a crime capital where criminals do not fear the police. A sudden spike in criminal cases, many of them caught on camera, has rattled the city. Former Delhi Police official LN Rao said that criminal cases have always taken place here. "But now there is fear as people are watching crime visuals. They are afraid of walking on the streets," he said.
In September, Delhi saw 130 robberies, 420 snatchings, 40 murders, 35 attempts to murder, 160 rapes, 200 molestations, 450 kidnappings, 200 burglaries, 150 house thefts and 3,400 motor vehicle thefts.
