Former civilian spymaster Aftab Sultan appointed Chairman NAB

Aftab Sultan was IG Punjab during 2013 elections and served twice as DG Intelligence Bureau

The federal cabinet approved the appointment of Aftab Sultan as NAB chairman. Aftab Sultan is former cop and served twice as DG IB. He belongs to police service of Pakistan and retired in grade 22. He is known as an upright, honest and principled officer.

As a police officer he refused to intervene in the referendum to elect general Pervaiz Musharaf as president of Pakistan. He was suspended by the government for not actively participating in the referendum.

Both PPP and PML-N appointed him as DG IB in their tenures. First, PPP appointed him DG IB after winning the elections in 2008 and then PML-N appointed him DG IB after forming the government in 2013. He was IG Punjab during the 2013 general election which was won by PML-N.

PTI might not like this appointment and oppose it. PTI chairman Imran Khan is not a great admirer of him.  Aftab Sultan was DG IB when in 2014, Imran Khan launched his long march and then 126 days long sit-in. It is believed that he played key role in foiling the bid to over throw the PML-N government led by PM Nawaz Sharif.

There were differences among the coalition partners on the appointment of new Chairman NAB. The former Chairman NAB justice (r) Javed Iqbal completed his tenure of four years in November 2021 but he continued working as chairman after the PTI government amend the NAB law.
