Tokyo Olympics 2020- America edge past China on the last day to retain top position

China maintained lead over USA through out the competition but it finished with second spot on the last day

The United States of America once again topped the Olympic medal tally with a total of 113 medals, including 38 Gold medals at the Tokyo 2020 Games. China finished second with 38 gold, 32 silver and 18 bronze (88) medals in total. While Russian Olympic Committee ROC) finished third in over all tally of medals. Japan grabbed more gold medals than Russia but finished fifth in overall medal tally. Great Britain finished fourth in medal tally.

It was a cliffhanger between US and China. China dominated the medal table most of the games. But US claimed three gold medals on the last day of completion to edge past China. In fact, the Americans trailed the Chinese for the most part of the Tokyo Olympics only to race past their arch-rivals on August 8.

China was leading 38-36 as the action headed to the final day but with 3 gold medals, USA finally edge past China in one of the closest races for the Olympic top spot in the history of the Games. Unfortunately, China did not have any gold medal matches on the final day.

USA registered its first gold medal on the final day when its women's basketball team beat Japan in the final. The second gold came from cyclist Jennifer Valente while the decisive podium finish came after the US women's volleyball team scripted history by winning its first-ever Olympic gold. It defeated Brazil in the old medal match.

USA's medal tally slipped considerably from the Rio Games. While they had won 46 gold medals in 30 fewer events in 2016, only 39 came in Tokyo as the country slipped in track events with none of its men winning gold medals - a first in modern Olympic history.

Pakistan once again failed to won a single Olympic medal. Even though, Arshad Nadeem qualified for the final of Jeweling  Throw but finished at fifth spot. His performance was a highlight for the Pakistan in this Olympics.

Pakistan Hockey team once again failed to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics. Pakistan has won 8 out 10 Olympic medals in hockey.

Tokyo Olympics kick started in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic after having been delayed by a year.
