Afghan defence minister and army chief resigned

Afghan defence minister and army chief resigned after the deadliest attack at a military base in Northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif. Nearly 100 people killed and scores injured in this attack. Most of the dead and injured were soldiers. Both came under heavy criticism from all corners. The military experts and parliamentarians criticised the top military  leadership for their lackluster response and negligence. They both decided to resign to silence the critics. The President Ashraf Ghani accepted the resignations.

Northern Afghanistan considered safer compare to the other parts of Afghanistan. But this attack shows that Taliban forces continue to expand their base and influence in North Afghanistan.  The scale of attack and death toll shocked the whole nation. The Taliban has increased attacks against security forces in recent period. The violence has also increased in last couple of years.
